Character Analysis

Character Analysis:

-Ellen Rosen: Basically, the story revolves around her and her friend. She’s very courageous for her age and is Jewish. She keeps everyone’s spirits up and she loves her paper dolls that Annemarie’s mom gave to her. Her parents live away from her as her friends ex- brother-in-law takes them into hiding. When they go to the countryside, they meet each other when about to escape with another couple.

-Annemarie Johansen: The brave, nice, and sweet ten year old girl who doesn’t have much life experience, but is determined to save her friend Ellen from the Nazis and being executed. She tries all her best not to get caught and not to put her family in danger and they succeed. They soon move to a place where they are safe at the end of the book.

-Mr. and Mrs. Johansen: Like their daughter, they try their best to save their neighbors and family friends who are Jewish from the Nazis. These two adults keep everyone’s hopes up and sacrifice a lot for their Danish neighbors.

-Mr. and Mrs. Rosen: They are the parents of Ellen Rosen and very depressed. They had completely lost hope until Mr. and Mrs. Johansen decided to help them hide until Hitler’s craziness is over. They all are safe at the end. They’re the pessimistic type of people, but their hopes are up.

-Peter: He was Annemarie Johansen’s soon to be brother-in-law until her older sister died. Even though his relationship with the family wouldn’t normally be as good, he keeps in good contact and visits whenever he is able to. He hid Mr. and Mrs. Rosen while Mr. and Mrs. Johansen had Ellen Rosen (their daughter). He is very kind hearted and acts like an older brother figure to Annemarie and her sister Kirsti.

-Kirsti: She’s Mr. and Mrs. Johansen’s daughter and Annemarie’s sister. She is very young and innocent as well as naïve. She’s stubborn, but still good hearted. She is described as a silly young little girl in the book and she’s not that mature. She still enjoys all those little things in life thought like paper dolls and she seems the least worried about being caught.

-Uncle Henrik: Annemarie’s maternal uncle (mom’s brother). He is fairly young and very experienced. He owns a couple of boats and works at the dock. He’s described as being very strong and the ideal wrestler type in stature. He cares a lot about his nieces, but most of all about his sister.
